D: Qual e' secondo te la piu' grande differenza fra comporre adesso e comporre 10 anni fa? R: La comparsa del disco fisso probabilmente. Il controllo e' diventato piu' conveniente. D: Di solito, quando componi, ti concentri su un solo brano o procedi parallelamente con diversi brani? R: Ne faccio uno per volta fino a completarlo. D: Ti e' mai capitato di fare musica in sogno? Q: When you go in a music shop, are you tempted to buy some new instrument? A: Since I like the tone of analogue instruments, I do not happen so often to see something I would like. Q: If you compare the composition of ten years ago with the present one, which is the major difference in your opinion? A: The birth of the hard disk, maybe. The operations and the handling have markedly improved now. Q: When you write a piece do you usually concentrate on it till the end or do you compose several pieces little by little at the same time? A: I write pieces one by one. Q: Have you happened to compose in a dream? A: Yes, I have quite often. Unfortunately I forget all when I wake up and it is a little bitter to start over again. R: Dato che mi faccio assorbire completamente dalla musica quando compongo, la luce e il mio umore non influenzano granche'. Se sto facendo una musica hard, piuttosto, sento il bisogno di un supplemento di proteine animali! Un'altra cosa e' che per concentrarmi tengo sempre il volume della televisione spento. D: C'e' qualche programma che ti piace in TV? R: Mi piacciono i programmi che propongono viaggi e natura. Siccome non posso andare da nessuna parte a causa dei tanti impegni, mi accontento delle immagini. D: Com'e' che passi una giornata di solito? R: Siccome lavoro a casa varia di giorno in giorno, ma per lo piu' mi alzo alle nove di mattina, bevo il caffe' e comincio a lavorare. A: It depends on the work, but usually, except for the music that I have to fit in a movie scene, I prefer not to use detailed material, since some ideas cross my mind freely without using something stereotyped. Q: Do your mood or the home environment (the illumination, for example) affect your work while you are writing a piece,? A: Since I concentrate all my efforts on the composition, my mood and the home environment haven't much influence on it. The only thing is that while I'm composing a hard piece I feel the need of animal proteins! Another thing is that to concentrate during my work I always keep the volume of the TV turned off. Q: Do you have some favorite television program? A: I like the programs of travels and nature. I can't go anywhere now for being so busy, and so I feel as to have been somewhere seeing the TV. Q: How do you spend a day ? A: Since I work at home, it depends on the day, but usually I get up at about 9:00 a.m., have a coffee, and then I begin my work. After the lunch, I continue the composition and the audio mix that I do when the surroundings are quiet, from midnight to early morning. I may say that my bedtime is 5-6 a.m.. Q: What do you do for a change of pace? A: I have not much time now, so I just look at the sky having a coffee on the veranda. I live in Tokyo and the sky is what is left from the many buildings, but I feel relief nevertheless. Q: What would you like to do now? A: To move into a new house! Siccome ascolto sempre durante il lavoro (!), non ascolto altro dopo. Non ho tempo e preferisco non pensare ad altra musica. Anche la famiglia mi aiuta in questo. Q Finora hai composto tantissima musica, ma come e' possibile produrre cosi' tanto?? Quanto tempo dedichi al lavoro? A A dir la verita' non lo capisco bene neanch'io. A pensarci e' davvero tanta la musica che ho registrato subito dopo aver avuto l'ispirazione. Per quel che riguarda il tempo, dipende. Mi godo la tastiera da circa 12 ore giorno a 20 nei periodi piu' impegnati (!?). Q Non la trovi una cosa troppo impegnativa? A Non direi questo per quanto riguarda il fare musica. Al contrario mi stresserebbe non aver nulla da fare (^_^). Q Le tue musiche vengono usate spesso nei telegiornali e nei programmi televisivi? A Personalmente non me ne accorgo, ma quando mia figlia urla: "Questo e' papa'!" me ne accorgo (^_^). Q Cosa fai per staccare un po'? A Di solito faccio una passeggiata di circa un'ora. Q You composed lots of works up to now... how could you make so many CDs?? And how long do you work a day? A Well...I don't know...Thinking about it, I could say that many works came out from a natural inspiration that I managed to record very quickly. As to the time, it depends. It's about 12 hours a day, but in the busy periods I'm enjoying the keyboard 20 hours a day (!?). Q Have you ever thought about it as a too hard work? A For composing it is not so. Interviewed on 5.20.2005 Qui, propongo un'intervista fatta per presentare attraverso quali passaggi Motoi Sakuraba e' arrivato a fare la musica che produce adesso D: Prima di tutto, quando e in che modo sei entrato in contatto con la musica? R: Circa a meta' del periodo dell'asilo, ho voluto seguire delle lezioni di piano, anche se non ne ricordo bene il motivo. So solo che l'insegnante era una persona bella e gentile e distribuiva dei dolci a fine lezione. Ho davvero un bel ricordo di quell periodo. (^_^) D: Le lezioni di piano sono poi continuate? R: Eh, no. Circa al quarto o quinto anno delle elementari ho smesso immediatamente in seguito al cambio dell'insegnante precedente che dopo essersi sposata e trasferita e' stata sostituita da un insegnante severissimo. Dopo, troppo impegnato nelle attivit? dei club, non ho piu' suonato per un po', ma dato che mi piaceva la musica ascoltavo spesso musica classica alla radio. D: Ti piaceva la musica classica? R: Non e' che mi piacesse la musica classica in particolare, anzi, le melodie cantate non mi piacciono granche', e' che mi capitava di ascoltarla! Poi un giorno leggendo in una rivista un articolo che riportava come Tomita aveva riprodotto per la prima volta brani di musica classica usando un sintetizzatore, essendo interessato ai sintetizzatori, ho cominciato ad appassionarmi. D: Ma mi pare di aver capito che alle scuole elementari, medie e superiori, hai fatto solo tanto sport… R: Si', alle elementari pallacanestro, alle medie e alle superiori facevo pallavolo giorno e notte. Quando sono passato alle superiori pero', con tutti i miei risparmi ho comprato il mio primo strumento musicale. D: Perche'? R: Beh, effettivamente il mio interesse non si era affatto spento. In quel periodo i sintetizzatori erano rari, e siccome volevo provarne uno, avendo passato l'esame di ammissione alle superiori, ho voluto farmi un regalo… e me lo sono comprato! (^_^) D: Il primo strumento che hai comprato cos'era? R: Era un sintetizzatore Tesco 110F. Allora nei negozi c'erano gli strumenti Tesco o Mini Korg ed io ero abbastanza indeciso, ma alla fine ho optato per il Dual Polyphonic Tesco. Questo sintetizzatore della Tesco era piuttosto particolare perche' aveva un pad di gomma che cambiava suono in base alla forza con cui si premeva, tuttavia con l'andar del tempo la gomma ? andata indurendosi e non riuscivo piu' a premere…(^_^) D: Ce l'hai ancora? R: L'ho lasciato in un'aula dell'universita' e al momento non so dove sia. Appena comprato, mi sono divertito a fare i suoni tipici dei videogame, a riprodurre il suono delle onde. Il secondo strumento che ho comprato e' la tastiera che si e' rotta quest'anno al concerto dell'Astro Hall, una Organ-Korg CX-3. L'avevo comprata all'incirca al secondo anno delle superiori. In quei giorni volevo fare degli accordi, ma con i sintetizzatori che uno studente poteva permettersi era impossibile! In un negozio l'avevo vista esposta e sono riuscito ad acquistarla a poco prezzo perche' graffiata. Mi e' piaciuta subito ma alla fine si e' rotta purtroppo. Adesso ho una CX-3 nuova, ma conservo la prima con grande cura, perche' e' uno strumento riempito della mia storia. D: Che attivita' facevi alle superiori? R: Beh, ovviamente ero molto impegnato con la pallavolo ma mi sono unito per aiutare dei miei amici che avevano formato una banda locale e facevano dei concerti. Non ricordo quando, ma una volta durante una nostra performance abbiamo dovuto smettere a causa di un black out! (^_^) Dopo, cominciata l'universita', riproducevo dei brani hard rock e ho cominciato pure a comporre qualche melodia nuova. Successivamente, attraverso varie vicende, sono passato a comporre musica per videogiochi, cartoni animati, drama, e anche colonne sonore di film, e questo fino ad ora. In futuro, perfezionandomi intanto che faccio questi lavori, spero di prepararmi per comporre ancora brani originali slegati dai precedenti. Grazie infinite Here I tried to interview Motoi Sakuraba for presenting how he got to compose the current music. Q: First of all, how did you approach music, and when? A: It was about in the middle of the preschool period. I attended some piano lessons but I don't remember well the reason. I know only that the teacher was very nice and at the end of every lesson she gave some cakes. I enjoyed those days very much. (^_^) Q: The piano lessons continued since that time? A: No, when was it? Maybe it was at the 4th or the 5th year of the elementary schools that I gave up because the previous teacher married and moved to another place and the new teacher was very severe. From then, I was quite busy due to the club activities so I didn't play the piano for a while. Anyway, since I liked music, I keep listening to classic music from the radio. Q: Did you like classic music? A: Well, it's not that I love it so much; in particular I don't like very much the song tracks, but, how to say… it happened that I listened to it. Then, seeing in a magazine an article about how Mr. Tomita for the first time in Japan succeeded in playing classic music using a synthesizer, since I was already interested in synthesizers, I began thinking about it. Q: But I heard that you did nothing but do sports during elementary school, junior and senior high schools… A: It is so! At the elementary school I played basket, while at the high school I spent day and night for training myself in the volley team I belonged. However, when entering the senior high school, I purchased my first instrument with all my savings. Q: Why? A: Because after all my interest was not diminished and at the time a synthesizer was quite rare. I wanted to play one so, when I passed the senior school admission test, I decided to present me with something and so… I bought it! (^_^) Q: So, what was your first instrument? A: I bought a synthesizer Tesco 110F. I was puzzled about which to choose between the Mini Korg and the Tesco available in the stores, and at last I decided to buy the dual polyphonic Tesco. That Tesco had a pitch band rather particular because it changed according to how strongly the rubber pad was pushed, but it got so stiff that I couldn't push it anymore…(^_^) Q: Do you still own it? A: I put it in some room at the university, but now I don't know where it is. When I just bought it, I enjoyed creating the sound of waves by noise, and creating the typical videogame sound. The next one I bought is the Organ-Korg CX-3 which broke this year during the live at the Astro Hall. I purchased it when I attended the second year of the senior high school. In those days I wanted to make some chords but it was impossible with the synthesizers that a student could buy. When I saw it in a store, I managed to buy it with a discount because there was some stain on the keyboard. I liked it very much but, in the end, it broke… Now I have a new CX-3 but I'll keep with care the first one anyway, since for me it is an instrument filled with my history. Q: When you attended the senior school, which was your activity? A: I was busy with the volley, sure, but I helped some friends of mine who formed a local band and did several live concerts. I don't remember when, but I still remember that once we were forced to give up because of a black out during a performance! (^_^) After I entered the university I played hard rock music and I even composed my first original tracks. Then, through various events, I started composing music for videogames, anime music, drama music and movies' OST. From now on, while improving myself by composing these types of music, I'd like to create new music not related to my job. Thank you very much.
